PAEDIATRIC AND ADOLESCENT CARDIOLOGY
Dr Khambadkone is the current Chief of Cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and Honorary Associate Professor of Cardiology at University College London. he has extensive training in general paediatrics, neonatology and paediatric cardiology. With his clinical experience of over 30 years, he is an expert in diagnosing and treating all aspects of cardiac problems. He currently works in the NHS as Paediatric and Adolescent Consultant Cardiologist, and Interventional Cardiologist at Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, London.
Dr Khambadkone deals with a large variety of cardiac conditions including heart murmurs, palpitations, chest pains, syncope or fainting and management of a wide spectrum of congenital and acquired heart diseases. He works very closely with a world class surgical team to deliver excellent results across the spectrum of complex heart conditions. Considered an expert in managing congenital and acquired heart diseases in babies, children and adolescents, he is often sought after as a valuable second opinion within the UK and internationally.
ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
Dr Khambadkone is a skilled echocardiographer in advanced echocardiography such as transoesophageal echocardiography, 3 Dimensional transthoracic and transesopheageal echocardiography, and tissue Doppler and strain imaging. His expertise includes intra-operative epicardial and trans-oesophageal echocardiography that aid decision making during the critical time of surgery. He has a keen interest in 3D modelling of congenital heart lesions and use of 3D models in planning interventional and surgical treatment of congenital heart disease and patient education for young persons and their families to understand complex cardiac conditions and their treatment.
CARDIAC CATHETERISATION
Dr Khambadkone is a pioneer and world leader in transcatheter valve therapy and is invited to Lecture and Proctor around the world. He was one of the British Heart Foundation Grant Holders and team leaders for introducing percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation, a novel technique of performing valve replacement without open heart surgery. This was recognised as a landmark innovation in treatment of congenital heart disease that has now expanded the use of valve repair and valve replacement procedures in children and adults. He has been instrumental in introducing the technique of percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation in various centres in UK, Italy, Spain, Denmark, France, India and Hong Kong. He is well experienced in its application in pulmonary , aortic and mitral (Melody in Mitral) positions.
In addition to interventional procedures such as balloon angioplasty, device closures of holes in the heart (atrial and ventricular septal defects, patent ductus arteriosus), stent angioplasty of pulmonary artery stenosis and coarctation, stenting of right ventricular outflow tracts, and valve implantations, he takes a keen interest in introducing novel techniques and devices in the field of congenital cardiology such as use of Atrial Flow Regulator (AFR) devices in diastolic heart failure in children to reverse or delay the onset of pulmonary arterial hypertension and to facilitate their eligibility for heart transplantation, implantation of Melody valve in mitral or aortic position and use of Piccolo devices for closing patent ductus arteriosus (PDAs) in premature babies with catheter techniques. He is one of the first to implant the Sapien pulmonic and Venus P valve for large outflow tracts in children.
TRANSITION CARE
Dr Khambadkone has developed the Adolescent Cardiology and Transition clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital, with his role as a Lead for Transition in Cardiology forming close links with the Adult Congenital Heart Diseases Team at the Heart Hospital and then St Bartholomew's Heart Centre. He runs a weekly clinic where teenagers are seen with problems such as chest pain, palpitations, syncope or fainting. With his team on Nurse Specialists and colleagues from the Grown Up Congenital Heart unit at St Bart’s Heart Centre, they provide a comprehensive and holistic care to young persons with congenital heart disease and their families to prepare for transfer to adult care during a very challenging time. He has established protocols for long term follow-up of operated congenital heart lesions. Dr Khambadkone was instrumental in setting up a unique event for teenagers and adolescents with congenital heart disease called “Rhythmic Beats” that is now used as a pan-London event for young persons to aid their Transition process.
NHS APPOINTMENT
Dr Sachin Khambadkone is the Chief of Cardiology at the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London. He is a Consultant in Paediatric and Adolescent Cardiology, an Interventional Cardiologist, and the Clinical Lead for Transition for over 20 years. He has academic affiliation as Honorary Associate Professor at University College London.
As the Clinical Lead for Transition in Cardiology and has set up a Transition Clinic for teenage patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital. With his team of clinical nurse specialists and colleagues from the Grown Up Congenital Heart (GUCH) unit at St Bartholomew’s Heart Centre, he provide a comprehensive and holistic care to young persons with congenital heart disease and their families to prepare for transfer to adult care during a very challenging time. He has established protocols for long term follow-up of operated congenital heart lesions.
Dr Khambadkone was instrumental in setting up a unique event for teenagers and adolescents with congenital heart disease called “Rhythmic Beats” that is now used as a pan-London event for young persons to aid education of young persons and their families about living with congenital heart disease and the impact on adult life.
TRAINING AND SPECIALISATION
Dr Khambadkone went to medical school and graduated from University of Mumbai, India. He achieved Distinctions in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Forensic Medicine during his undergraduate studies. He did his post graduate training in Paediatrics with a M.D. in Paediatrics from University of Mumbai, India. He also received a Diplomate from National Board of Examination in Paediatrics (DNB). He worked as a Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics and Neonatology at the King Edward Memorial Hospital, University of Mumbai and set up the first Paediatric Cardiology clinic jointly with the Cardiology department at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
In UK, he trained in Neonatology at the Queen Charlotte and Chelsea Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital in London. He successfully passed the Membership exams in Paediatrics conducted by the Royal College of Paediatricians, London, in 1996. He began his training in Paediatric Cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 1997. During his training, he was highly regarded for his clinical skills, expertise in echocardiography and introduction of 3D echocardiography, and potential in the field of Interventional Cardiology. He was a British Heart Foundation Research Fellow and Principal Investigator for "Haemodynamic predictors of failing Fontan Circulation" looking at pulmonary vascular resistance and ventriculo-arterial coupling in Fontan circulation.
He was awarded the Certification of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatric Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 2004, with subspecialisation in the field of Interventional Cardiology with a post CCT Fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He was a co-applicant for a British Heart Foundation grant (worth £888,125) and investigator for "Percutaneous Implantation of Cardiac Valves" a study that pioneered the application of transcatheter heart valve implantation in pulmonary position, which over the last two decades, has expanded to valve implantation and interventions in all heart valves.
As a Consultant, he developed the Adolescent Cardiology and Transition clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital, with his role as a Lead for Transition in Cardiology forming close links with the Adult Congenital Heart Diseases Team at the St Bartholomew's Heart Centre ensuring a smooth transition for young persons and their families during a challenging time for them with a change in model of care but with maintenance of continuity and confidence.
INTERNATIONAL PROFILE
Dr Khambadkone is recognised as a world expert in Paediatric Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. As the current Chief of Cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital, he is a key opinion leader in the field of paediatric cardiology and interventional cardiology in United Kingdom, Europe and United States. He provides a second opinion to patients from within UK, and internationally. He is often consulted about complex issues in paediatric cardiology and interventional cardiology from colleagues, peers and parents from all over the world.
He is an invited speaker, moderator and Chair at various national (British Congenital Cardiac Association; Cardiology in the Young) and International (Congenital and Structural Interventions, Frankfurt; Paediatric Interventional Cardiac Society, USA; American Heart Association, USA; American College of Cardiology, USA; Paediatric Cardiology Society of India; Cardiology Society of India; Asia Pacific Congenital and Structural Heart Symposium, Hong Kong; Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology, Transcatheter Valve Symposiums, European Course of Echocardiography, Czech Republic).
Dr Khambadkone has research interests in Interventional Cardiology, Ebstein anomaly, Fontan circulation and diastolic heart failure in children. He has published widely in reputed peer-reviewed journals and is a reviewer for many international journals in his field.
His recent few international invited talks were at the Congenital and Structural Interventions (SCI) in Frankfurt, Germany June 2023; at the 8th World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (WCPCCS) in Washington DC, USA August 2023; and the 23rd Annual Conference of Paediatric Cardiac Society of India (PCSI) November 2023.
