Dr Khambadkone has extensive training in general paediatrics, neonatology and paediatric cardiology. With his clinical experience of nearly 30 years, he is an expert in diagnosing and treating all aspects of cardiac problems such as heart murmurs, chest pain, palpitations, fainting and a wide spectrum of simple and complex congenital heart diseases.

Dr Khambadkone has his paediatric cardiology private practice at the The Portland Hospital, and at International and Private Patient Care, Great Ormond Street Hospital, both in London.

CHEST PAIN

Chest pain is a common symptom between 5 to 18 years of age causing great anxiety. Reassuringly, the pain only very rarely suggests something serious and these can be easily excluded on consulting with a paediatric cardiologist.

SYNCOPE

Vasavagal syncope is very common, especially if there is family history. Many children and young adults, more common in girls, have had at least one faint. It is often seen after standing in one posture for a long duration, or following a sudden change of posture, and in a hot environment with poor ventilation.

RHEUMATIC HEART DISEASE

Rheumatic fever is a condition that follows infection with a bug called streptococcus. This often causes sore throat in the preceding weeks, and only in some individuals is followed by rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever affects the heart in addition to joints, skin and brain.

HEART MURMURS

Heart murmurs are sounds are additional  sounds created by closure of the inlet and outlet valves. They are the commonest reason of referral for consultation to a paediatric cardiologist.

CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE

Comprise defects of the heart present at birth and include holes in the heart (atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus), diseases of the valve (aortic valve stenosis, pulmonary valve stenosis), narrowing of arteries (coarctation of aorta, pulmonary artery stenosis) or complex abnormalities of connection.

KAWASAKI DISEASE

Kawasaki disease commonly affects children under 5 years of age. It is less common in UK but more common in Asia and Japan. The characteristic symptoms occurring in various combination are: high fever lasting for 5 days or more with rash, swollen neck glands, dry cracked lips, red fingers or toes, red eyes.

PALPITATIONS

Heart palpitations are heart beats that become suddenly noticeable. This could be due to the beat being missed, a stronger sensation of the beat, or fast beats out of proportion to the activity .

MYOCARDITIS

It describes inflammation of the heart muscle. The most common cause of myocarditis is viral infection. A couple of weeks after a viral infection, symptoms of chest pain, breathlessness, fatigue, palpitations or fainting should be considered as warning signs.

IRREGULAR HEART RHYTHM

Abnormalities of heart rhythm are called arrhythmia. It may beat either too slowly, too quickly or irregularly. Extra heart beats (ectopics) are quite common and if infrequent, are not considered abnormal. Abnormal heart rhythms lead to inefficient pumping by the heart, and over a period of time, could cause heart failure.
