SYNCOPE
Vasavagal syncope is very common, especially if there is family history. Many children and young adults, more common in girls, have had at least one faint. It is often seen after standing in one posture for a long duration, or following a sudden change of posture, and in a hot environment with poor ventilation.
CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
Comprise defects of the heart present at birth and include holes in the heart (atrial septal defect or ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus), diseases of the valve (aortic valve stenosis, pulmonary valve stenosis), narrowing of arteries (coarctation of aorta, pulmonary artery stenosis) or complex abnormalities of connection.
KAWASAKI DISEASE
Kawasaki disease commonly affects children under 5 years of age. It is less common in UK but more common in Asia and Japan. The characteristic symptoms occurring in various combination are: high fever lasting for 5 days or more with rash, swollen neck glands, dry cracked lips, red fingers or toes, red eyes.
IRREGULAR HEART RHYTHM
Abnormalities of heart rhythm are called arrhythmia. It may beat either too slowly, too quickly or irregularly. Extra heart beats (ectopics) are quite common and if infrequent, are not considered abnormal. Abnormal heart rhythms lead to inefficient pumping by the heart, and over a period of time, could cause heart failure.
